Silage Production with Limited Water
--Dr. Bill Curran, Research Scientist – Pioneer Hi-Bred International

Limited water is the norm for much of Colorado corn production.  Producing a viable silage crop can be a challenge under these conditions.  Water management strategies have an impact on total yield and quality.  From limited irrigation experiments, Dr. Curran will discuss critical times of crop development, water use, and what strategies may be applied to maximize corn silage production.  He will also cover some risks associated with silage production under severe drought stress.

NDF and Starch Digestibility - Current Use and Application of These Analyses.
--Dave Taysom,
Director, Dairyland Laboratories, Inc. – Arcadia, WI
The rate and extent of fiber and starch digestibility are important factors for optimizing rumen health.  However, these analyses are difficult to run and therefore, they are not routinely performed in commercial laboratories.  Dave will focus on the current state of fiber and starch digestibility analysis and how these analyses are used to maintain proper rumen function and enhance milk and beef production.

Strip Till (Conservation Tillage) Increases Crop Production Under Limited Irrigation Compared to Conventional Tillage
--Jeff Tichota,
Technology Development Representative – Monsanto

Successive years of comparing Strip-Till and conventional tillage on corn production under three limited water levels shows that conserving crop residue and increasing soil quality will enhance corn yields compared to conventional tillage practices.  Jeff will focus on soil quality improvement, crop yield, corn population, and effect of weed and insect control under full and limited irrigation.
