Timing
of the Culling Event
--Dr.
Roger Cady,
Tech
Service Science & Compliance Lead – Monsanto Dairy Business
Every cow is eventually culled. Thus, it is not a question of
“if” a cow will be culled; but, rather when she will be
culled. Dr. Cady will cover three factors that are necessary to
successfully manage culling 1) how often does the event occur
(rate), 2) when does the event occur (timing), and 3) why the
event occurred at that time. He will also discuss the
internal/external and controllable/uncontrollable factors that
influence culling. Culling management is more complex than
simply reducing herd turnover rate. There is an optimum time to
cull a cow based on her productive, reproductive, health status,
and her probability for future economic success. Opportunity
exists to better manage the timing of cull events. |

Adult Dairy Cow Mortality
--Dr. Frank Garry,
Integrated
Livestock Management Program Coordinator - CSU
The death rate of adult cows on U.S.
dairies appears to be increasing over time and is a growing concern for dairy
producers. There are numerous potential causes of high death rates; but, the
problem is complex and there are not easy answers for how producers can decrease
these losses. This talk will take a look at dairy mortalities, discuss what we
are doing to investigate this phenomenon, and provide ideas for action on
Colorado dairies. |

Understanding Why There Is
So Much Variation in the Success of the Transition Program
--Dr. Bill Sanchez,
Technical Service
Director/Field Research WEST – Diamond V Mills
We continue to see
a lot of variation in the health and performance of transition dairy cows. Why
is it that on one herd nearly every cow calves without problems, begins a strong
and successful lactation, gets bred when we want them to, and dries off at an
ideal body condition ready to deliver us another healthy heifer? Yet, on
another dairy that feeds nearly the same rations, almost the exact opposite
happens. Dr. Sanchez will discuss factors that he believes will make your dairy
more like the first one described and why he believes that if you focus on these
factors and implement some of the strategies that he will discuss your dairy
will be ultimately more profitable. |
